A recent survey has shown that consumer trust in energy suppliers has decreased with the current energy crisis. When it comes to customer loyalty gas and electricity suppliers are ranked amongst the lowest.

Many consumers believe that energy companies should be helping to offset the rising cost of living. This comes as suppliers have seen a huge rise in profits due to the rising price of energy. Many government officials and consumers have called for these energy companies to pay a windfall tax to pay for energy support in the UK.

However, companies have said that they are going to be using profits to increase renewable generation and investment. Not only will this achieve advancements towards the UK’s net zero goal but also improve our energy security.

Consumers still believe that bigger companies should be offering discounts themselves, showing that they listen to their customers and are willing to help.

The energy market is also extremely competitive and volatile, this could be another reason why we have seen customer loyalty dwindle. With prices going up many energy consumers have decided to switch energy contracts to ensure they are on the lowest prices possible when renewing their tariffs. Therefore, this leads to many people swapping to the cheapest supplier as well.

Should I be switching energy suppliers right now?

Right now, it is more important than ever for your business to be on the correct energy tariff. The government’s energy price cap for businesses began this month. This is good news for anyone on a business energy tariff, but the amount of support you receive depends on the energy contract you are on.

If you are on a fixed rate contract, then you will pay a capped price on the wholesale element of your energy bills. This will be capped at 21.1p/kWh for electricity and 7.5p/kWh for gas.

For those on deemed, variable or default tariffs you will only receive discounts on the wholesale cost of energy. The discount will be between the wholesale price of energy and a maximum discount of 34.5p/kWh for electricity and 9.1p/kWh for gas. With this, you will still be vulnerable to price fluctuations in the wholesale market. On these types of tariffs, you are likely going to be paying a lot more than those on a fixed rate tariff for your energy bills.

This support for businesses is going to last until March 31st, which means you could pay less for your energy bills throughout the harsh winter months when demand for energy usually pushes prices up.
