Since the energy crisis began a lot of businesses have seen a rise in supplier issues when it comes to their energy bills.

With higher energy prices businesses have been put in a difficult position when it comes to energy bills, with this long period of high energy volatility that we have seen over the past few years in the energy market, Ofgem has seen a steady rise in complaints from businesses.

Ofgem has made it clear that customer transparency is key when it comes to the supplier-business relationship.  This means that if businesses are struggling with energy bills there are key steps suppliers should be following to ensure you get fair treatment in such hard times.

As an energy consultant, we have a good relationship with a number of top UK suppliers. This means we have a good understanding of what practices a good supplier should be following to ensure customers are not facing any mistreatment.

What best practices your supplier should be following?

Transparency

Ofgem has said that suppliers should be transparent with business energy customers. This relates to when customers are finding it hard to pay energy bills, suppliers should remain engaged. Make sure that your supplier has set processes for what happens if your business cannot pay its energy bills.

Clear communication

Proactive communication should always come from suppliers when it comes to discussing payments from non-domestic energy customers. If companies are struggling communication needs to be made before disconnecting them. This includes letters, phone calls, emails, or the customer’s preferred contact method.

Being reasonable

It is also important that suppliers are reasonable with their customers in terms of charges. Ofgem has stated that suppliers should not charge any more than a reasonable amount when it comes to security deposits. The regulators have also suggested that suppliers be reasonable with customers.

Vulnerable customers

Ofgem has also suggested that suppliers should take more care when it comes to businesses that are vulnerable when it comes to energy prices. Some domestic energy customers may be in a shared occupancy on a non-domestic residence. The regulators have suggested that supplies try to avoid disconnection with these customers.
